CANDLEMASS – DACTYLIS GLOMERATA – 1998 (SWE) progressive/space rock/doom metal

Nice doomy heavy metal from the Swedes of Candlemass. It might not be in My Dying Bride class but it is not far from it. The music is gloomy and sad as it should be and so are the lyrics. From time to time it sounds a little like the newer Katatonia (also from Sweden) with some sound touches from Anathema, one of the first big doom bands in the world. The singer Björn Flodkvist has a nice voice but sometimes when he screams it doesn´t sound very good. This recording is also a little uneven as some of the songs like "I Still See The Black" and "Karthago" are really great with some nice heavy riffing but some of the other songs are sometimes a little too noisy. The members of Candlemass are doubtless very skilled musicians and it sort of feels like they could have done better than this. It is however a good album, better than average, and is really worth buying if you like heavy melodic doom. The album was produced by the bass player Leif Edling, who also wrote all the tracks on the album, and recorded at the Swedish Radio Broadcasting Corporation Studio 4 by Uffe Östling.
